Remember your blogs have to be "Public". You have to enable "I would like my blog to be visible to anyone who visits, including search engines, archivers and in public listings around this site. " OPTIONS==>PRIVACY

I get a database error when trying to use this plugin: WordPress database error: [Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation 'UNION']. There's a bunch more to the message... is this enough to decipher what's going on?

I think you have setup different collation for different blogs [tables]. One table has collation setup as "latin1_swedish_ci" and another table has collation setup as "utf8_general_ci". Change all to one collation.

Hello tansu, you can show the result as a widget in a different WP blog when you place the plugin files into the plugins directory not the mu-plugins directory, users blog can activates it .::: Coder est un Art :::.
